Ede & Ravenscroft are the oldest tailors in London, established in 1689. They have three London premises, in Gracechurch Street, Chancery Lane and Burlington Gardens, very close to the famous Savile Row.  As well as custom tailoring, they make, sell and hire out legal gowns and wigs, clerical dress, civic and municipal robes, academic dress and other ceremonial and formal dress.  The main (and historic) outlet is at 93 Chancery Lane which, due to its proximity to the Inns of Court and the country’s main civil and criminal law courts, is also the company’s main outlet for legal dress.

The company holds royal warrants as “Purveyors to the British Royal Family”, robemakers to Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, and previously the Queen Mother. Because the Queen Mother’s warrants expired five years after her death in 2002, Ede & Ravenscroft currently hold three warrants.

The present pair show here, a classic model, has been a staple of both this retailer and the maker, Edward Green, for many years. It has been found under Green’s own label and, at various times, under the labels of several other prominent British tailors. Polo featured this Edward Green model in their Black Label line and another American brand, Cole-Haan, although shoemakers themselves, showed this and one or two other Edward Green models, some years ago.

It can properly be said that this model has the imprimatur of England’s finest tailors and the Establishments to whom they cater. Notice the cartouche in the left shoe intended to take the name of the client.  Ede & Ravenscroft are bespoke tailors, after all.

Edward Green ready-mades sell for as much as $1400 today. enquiries@edwardgreen.com
