Oxblood Shell Cordovan Full Brogue Oxford
This particular fine, Shell Cordovan Oxford, most likely from the 1950s, is of special interest for having a hand-sewn welt. Moreover, the master shoemaker in question evidently used the best grade of shell cordovan, at a time in history when a fraction of today’s volume of cordovan leathers were tanned, allowing for only the best raw hides to be chosen for tanning, quality of materials that is hard to duplicate today.. Moreover this is the less common Oxford model (as distinct from the usual Derby or Budapester) , a marvelous classic in the old tradition of workmanship, a handsome and extremely durable shoe made by a first class journeyman shoemaker jobber for re-branding by a luxury retail-haberdasher.
A final word about this pair; cordovan is prized for the infinite depth and richness of patina it develops over the years, and old cordovan that has achieved a patina like this present pair, is prized above all because it cannot be arrived at except through repeated use, careful maintenance, and patient ownership. This is a pair destined for the collection, the wardrobe, of a gentleman who values tradition over newness, elegance over ostentation.
