Classic Goodyear Welted
Cap-Toe Oxford
Euro 440The Ferragamo production appears to be divided into three grades, the ubiquitous Ferragamos seen in every department store worldwide and deeply discounted (for good reason), the Studio line, a better product, much appreciated by fans of this brand but still glued or Blake Stitched and, finally, the Tramezza line (known before 2004 as the “Classic”-as shown here), Ferragamo’s pride and the product on which it good name rests today, a Goodyear welted shoe (see the last close-up, below). For a comprehensive and most entertaining overview of Italian shoes and shoemakers read Dr. Jens P. Becker’s authoratative blog on the subject: http://loomings-jay.blogspot.de/2015/11/italienische-herrenschuhe.html
The quality of leather used in the Tramezza line is certainly in the best category and the construction is of the proper welted and closed channeled type with at least some of the work done by hand. The Ferragamo website suggests hand-lasting and double needle hand sewing of the sole but this is unproven. Still, the sewing is on a par with Crockett & Jones’ Hand Grades or Grensons Masterpiece line, and the convex waist of the Tramezza shoes appears to confirm hand-lasting over a steel shank, the system originated in the 1950s by the master himself. Other signature techniques include the use of a washed-leather sub-stratum in place of the usual cork in the Tramezza shoes. Aficionados who swear by the line report exceptional comfort and flexibility while never compromising retention of shape. Current prices approach Euro 900 for the Tramezza line of Ferragamos of which this is the predecessor; http://www.neimanmarcus.com/Salvatore-Ferragamo-Carmelo-Tramezza-Lace-Up-Oxford-Black/prod167300226/p.prod
Colour: This is a medium brown, a little darker than the other identical size 12 (46) Ferragamo shown here.
History: A word about SALVATORE FERRAGAMO: Born in Naples, Italy, in 1898. He made his first pair of shoes for his sister at the age of 9. His parents were poor farmers and could not buy shoes for his sisters to go to church for their first communion. Salvatore borrowed materials from the village cobbler and made them himself. At age 14 after studying shoemaking in Naples, he opened his first shop with 6 workmen. Yet more amazingly, at the age of 16, he moved to California and opened a shoemaking shop inSanta Barbara! Unsatisfied with the beautiful but uncomfortable shoes of the era, he studied anatomy at the University of Southern California. After some experimentation, he perfected the steel arch support that he inserted into the instep of every shoe. Soon he relocated toHollywood, where for more than 30 years he shod the whole galaxy of film stars from Lillian Gish in the silent era to Marilyn Monroe in more recent times. Greta Garbo once purchased 70 pairs of shoes in one visit to Ferragamo’s shop. His beautiful shoes filled the pages of the world’s top fashion magazines and the firm expanded tremendously into prêt-a-portez with predictable compromises. Nevertheless, in the Ferragamo firm’s “Tramezza Line”, their hand made, limited production, top boutique offering, his successors honour the great tradition of the old master, Salvatore, who is now cobbler to the angels.
