It is safe say that this marvelous vintage shoe by the long premier Golf shoemaker in the world, Footjoy, is one-of-a-kind. As with any golf shoe, the steel spikes can be exchanged for soft spikes in a matter of minutes, or removed entirely for street use. The all-weather sole is extremely durable and it is supremely comfortable on even the hardest surfaces, and like all Goodyear welted soles, easily exchanged if ever you are able to wear it out, a doubtful eventuality. The build quality of Footjoy special order shoes is superior to almost all ready-mades on the market today and comparable to that of fine bespoke shoes.  As to the leathers employed by FootJoy, they are equaled by very few in use today.

About Footjoy: Golfers the world round know that the finest traditional golf shoes are made and have been made throughout the 20th century by one shoemaker, The FootJoy Company. FootJoy began its operation as the Burt & Packard Shoe Company founded in Brockton Massachusetts in 1857. In 1927 the company took the name of its premier line of shoes, the FootJoy. Since then they have been the leading golf shoe on the PGA tour, the # 1 selling golf shoe in England and the undisputed leader in the manufacture of Golf Shoes in the world. Our interest here is in FootJoy’s fine, hand-made, classic street shoes made a generation ago for their gentleman clients. These vintage and antique FootJoys represent the pinnacle of craftsmanship and luxury, and are highly prized by collectors and aficionado of fine shoes.

I have learned recently that in March 2008 FootJoy closed it last American-based factory in Brockton, Massachusetts. While the firm continues to produce large numbers of sneaker-like golf shoes in its off-shore facilities, this last bastion of old-world craftsmanship in golf shoes is relegated to history, and with it the last source for us of special-order lizard and other exotic-skinned golf and street shoes, the finest in the world. For the moment, a small coterie of craftsmen remain to perform repairs but the 103 highly skilled craftsmen, some of whom had worked in the Field Street Factory since the introduction of the “Classic” line of shoes in 1959, are gone. Shoemaking became a major industry in Brockton in the 1880s, and remained so well into the 20th century, but with the exception of the FootJoy plant, shoemaking has already been extinct in Brockton for decades. Once more the painstaking traditional Goodyear welted shoe is driven out of the market by the far cheaper cemented shoe.

Man kann guten Gewissens sagen, dass dieser wunderbare Vintage-Shoe von “Footjoy” – dem 1. Haus am Platz für Golfschuhe – ein einzigartiges Stück ist. Footjoy nimmt noch immer Bestellungen für seine umwerfenden Golf-und Strassenschuhe, doch dieses Modell wurde seit Jahrzehnten nicht mehr angeboten. Wie bei jedem Golfschuh können die Spikes innerhalb von Minuten durch weiche Spikes ersetzt werden, oder für den Strassengebrauch gänzlich entfernt werden. Die All-Weather-Sohle ist extrem haltbar und ausgesprochen bequem, selbst auf härtesten Strassenbelägen und (wie alle rahmengenähten Sohlen) können sie -sollten sie tatsächlich abgetragen werden- leicht ausgetauscht werden. Die Qualität der Fertigung bei Footjoy “Special Order” Anfertigungen ist auf einer Ebene mit den weltweit besten Konfektions-Schuhen anzusiedeln und die Qualität der verwendeten Leder ist unvergleichlich.
