Two-Tone Scotch Grain/Museum Calf Cap-Toe Balmoral (Oxford) Field Boot

Meermin’s Two-Tone Scotch Grain over Museum Calf Cap-Toe Balmoral (Oxford) Boot is among the handsomest of the type and, at less than half the price of similar models by Graziano & Girling or Edward Green (their Shannon model), certainly the most price-worthy quality boot on the market in recent years, all the more so for being hand welted. This boot was made in limited numbers and is now out of production. It was from their top level “Linea Maestro” line and not to be confused with their general production. Meermin appears to have employed every superior technique of manufacture, from the channeled and skived hand welt to the hand-nailed combination heel, every detail short of fitting to the individual client. The choice of leathers is impressive. I can imagine that the Museum Calf “shoe” will take polish beautifully and, in the right hands, develop a spectacular patina, perhaps a shade darker toe would be nice, to echo the darker shank of the boot.

A boot like this, particularly with oxford/Balmoral lacing, can be worn in place of any oxford shoe, with any suits, odd trousers, daytime or sporting, and appear, under trousers, to be a normal shoe. Only upon sitting down are they pleasantly revealed as boots! And it as correct to combine a boot of this sort with daytime dress as it is to wear them in rough environments, hunting and shooting, for which they were, after all, originally conceived. The boot is derived from the “Navvy Boot” worn by Civil Engineers, Canal and Railroad workers at the turn of the century and before, and, because of it proven utility, adopted by officers in WWI. It has never gone out of style since and has remained ubiquitous in both civilian and military life.

Meermin is not one of my usual shoemaker but this boot is beyond reproach, both in terms of construction and materials, and, as important, is as lovely a colour and leather combination as we are likely to see and, so, entirely worthy of the critical eyes of my gentlemen clients.
