Cable Car Clothiers, the legendary men’s haberdashery of San Francisco, with Mr. Charles Pivnick, in his 61st year of serving an elite community of gentlemen shoppers, has provided a wide range of imported accessories from the best English makers. For dress clothes, bow ties, braces, hats and fine toiletries there is no shop to compare in California. It is unfortunate that Cable Car Clothiers discontinued the sale of shoes some years ago. Their proprietary shoes at the time, made for them by E. Green, were as fine as any I have ever seen. The pair in this listing is as well made and as lovely an example of this indispensable classic, the Brown Suede Full Brogue Oxford, as one is like to see anywhere. It appears to be built on Green’s 202 last, but in all other respects this shoe is uniquely fashioned. The nail pattern of the heel and the finishing of the channelled and skived sole remind one of a much earlier production, while the full leather lining suggest a more modern shoe. The quality of the suede is immediately apparent and bespeaks of luxury. The elongated, but not exaggerated, wing-tip is most flattering to the foot, without calling undue attention to itself. All in all, a very successful and pleasing version of this traditional model.

My intention is to show Mr. Pivnic the shoe on my next trip to San Francisco and confirm its age and, considering the unfamiliar mixture of elements, how the commission with the shoemaker was arranged. Still, whatever the vintage, this is a hand-finished product of the first category and, moreover, a charming and now otherwise unobtainable piece of San Francisco history.

In my opinion, the model itself, the Brown Suede Full Brogue Oxford, cannot be improved upon as to elegance. As I am fond of saying, this is the daytime shoe we see worn by the best dressed gentlemen on London streets, as often, against the conventional wisdom, with blue or gray pin or chalk striped suits as with the obvious earth-toned sporting jackets and plaids with which it contrasts so naturally. Along with the plain front or monk strap suede shoe, this is a basic in the gentleman’s wardrobe. My long-standing clients will know what I mean when I say that this shoe is presented here with my highest recommendation.
