    Budapester

Founded by Hans Mayr in Munich in 1596, this is the oldest existing shoemaking firm in the world. Purveyor to the Saxon royal house, the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and, since 1895, holding a Royal Warrant from the Bavarian royal house,

At the beginning of the 20th century Wilhelm Eduard Meier expanded the firm’s offerings with high-quality ready-made shoes. Today the firm is led by siblings Peter Eduard and Brigitte Meier (13th generation).

The present pair, with its closed channel Goodyear Welting (as with bespoke shoes), further brass nailing of both soles and heels and padded sock liner, appears to exceed the various other levels of shoes offered by Meier, In short, the care and craftsmanship that has gone into this masterpiece are quite dazzling, even to the TanRite® chromium-free tanning process for the lining and inner-sole.  Of course, the model is a true Budapester, even employing the robust “Scotch” or “Zug” grain calfskin often seen in Alpine boots, and typical of the earliest, original versions of the Budapester.

From my last visit to their lovely Residenzstrasse shop in Munich, I find that Ed. Meier’s prices for shell cordovan shoes have now risen to above Euro 1290 and calfskin shoes, over Euro 890. The present model, “Julius”, appears to no longer be available except by special order and may well exceede these prices.    See: mail@EdMeier.de Tel:089-220044
