This is an extraordinary pair of shoes, the only one I personally have ever seen from this bespoke shoemaker. Custom-made from a lovely grade of shell cordovan, a colour that Alden likes to call “cigar”, which, for us, suffice it say, “brown”,…with the slight reddish undertone characteristic of cordovan. But for the beautiful colour, in all other aspects, this is a classic Full Brogue Oxford.

Some further details: the forefoot lining is in cream coloured glove leather, promising comfort from the first moment. The heel counters are suede, to prevent slippage.

Since the 1950’s and the occupation of Shanghai by the Red forces, Hong Kong, long the Eastern outpost of the British Empire, became the Mecca for tailoring, dressmaking and shoemaking to the European trade, and the premiere destination for exacting shoppers in the Orient. Meyer, occupying among the most prominent shops, in the most prominent location in the most luxurious hotel in Hong Kong, naturally garners much of this elevated trade. And deservedly, their handwork is a testament to the skill of his workmen and this present shoe is a prime example of bespoke shoemaking at its very finest.

Recent political events in Hong Kong -China’s clamping down on liberties in this colony- bode ill for the future. The day of fine tailoring and shoemaking for the foreign trade may soon come to an end. If this masterpiece is your size, do not hesitate; it may be the last of its kind before the bamboo curtain falls.

New and unworn. Please notice that these shoe have never been polished and should be polished before wearing outside. Use a thin coat of clear or light tan coloured polish, to preserve the lovely colour and not darken it prematurely. Sold without trees.
