George J. Cleverley
Split-Toe Norwegian
Double Sole and Hand Raised Apron
Euro 850From the late 70s to his death in 1991 the great George Cleverley worked as a design consultant for New & Lingwood, and, today, the excellent firm bearing his name, George J. Cleverley & Co., under the direction of Mr. George Glasgow, carries out the master’s great legacy. Cleverley is considered to be the greatest master shoemaker of the mid- to late-20th century, and in a direct line with his master, arguably the greatest master of modern English shoemaking, the London shoemaker, Nikolaus Tuczek, about whom I will write more in the coming months.
The present pair is a lovely Norwegian with double sole and, of course, closed channel welt. The tan close grain calfskin takes beautifully to polish to a tremendously pleasing effect. Ask about fitted Cedar Shoe trees to round out your new acquisition.
COLOUR: As you can see, my photos utterly fail to capture the true colour of these treasures even with different camera settings. They are a lovely, warm, medium brown, not as dark as the darker pictures and not as light as the light ones.
Size Details:
(UK) 8E.....(US) 9D.....(Continental) 42D, for the medium width foot.
Shoe Condition:
Superb, all original, very lightly worn, as can be seen, the first rubbing of the bottoms only, consistent with a few wearings only. Original dove-tailed McAfee style heels shoe almost no wear.
