This is the rarest of the rare. Sharkskin is more rare than alligator today. Norwegians more rare than wing tips. Among Norwegians brown sharkskin more rare than black (this is the only brown sharkskin Norwegians I have ever shown). Moreover, among such shoes, US size 12 and larger are exceedingly rare; size 13 more so. Finally, to find a pair in new, unused condition, in this day and age, well….I, for one, am unable to calculate the chances. Suffice it to say, it is one-of-a-kind today.
Judging from the workmanship and treatment of the lining, this shoe most likely dates from the 1970’s. These marvelous Sharkskin Norwegians are beautifully hand-lasted, Goodyear welted, entirely edge-bound. The skins are soft and pliable as the day they were made. This pair is in perfect condition. The colour of these shoes is a lovely medium brown, something between the two shades of brown shown with different camera settings -it is difficult to do justice to the colour accurately in photographs, but it is just the right brown for all occasions.  This shoe, both from the point of view of design and materials, possesses a quiet elegance that signal extremes of luxury without the slightest ostentation.
The use of Sharkskin in the making of shoes, now no longer done for reasons of conservation, is a largely American phenomenon. The two major producers were Footjoy and Allen Edmonds. One does see quite some variation from one pair to the next in the selection of skins; these being a rather closer grain than used in less fine examples. The effect is rather sleeker and very elegant, the result nothing less than a work of art, a museum-pieces, destined for the passionate and knowledgeable collector.
As an afterthought; sharkskin seems to be virtually indestructible and, not surprisingly, rather waterproof.  A shoe like this is only available today from a custom shoemaker (in the unlikely case that they could find the material!), thus the replacement cost must be seen to be in the many thousands. Certainly one of the most beautiful and glamourous shoes ever made by Allen Edmonds, superior in construction, materials and appearance to any modern offering.
