    Dieser antike Alligator Johnston & Murphy Norweger ist einer der elegantesten und ganz gewiss einer der luxuriösesten Modelle die unter den Derbys zu finden sind; eine Massanfertigung, die aus der besten Epoche dieser feinen Firma stammt (50er-70er Jahre), von einem der angesehensten amerikanischen Schuhmacher der vergangenen 100 Jahre. Es ist traurig, dass die altehrwürdige Firma nach ihrem Bankrott nicht mehr existiert. Ihr guter Name schmückt nun äusserst fragwürdige moderne Schuhe, meist Offshore-Produkte billigster Qualität.

    Nun zu diesem Paar: fast alle Johnston & Murphy’s waren Konfektionsware, jedoch die Prestige-Boutiquen von J & M in New York, Chicago und Dallas hatten eine gewisse Zeit lang Angestellte beschäftigt, die „Fachmann“ im Massnehmen waren. So wurde massgenommen, der Stil diskutiert und die Bestellung in die Haupt-Werkstatt gesandt, wo die Schuhe handgefertigt wurden, von ausgesuchten Schuhmachern, nach ausgesuchten Leisten. Diese Florsheim-Massanfertigungen, selbst damals eine Rarität, kann man heute kaum mehr finden. Sie sind absolute Sammlerstücke, mehr noch Museums-Stücke – gäbe es ein solches Museum, das deratige eleganteste Meisterwerke präsentieren würde.

    Der erfahrene Sammler unter Ihnen wird sofort die geschliffene Form des Schuhes und der Sohle als eine Massanfertigung erkennen können. Die Sohlen sind, in feinster Tradition des Schuhhandwerkes, um einen Stahl-Schaft gearbeitet. Die schmale Taille und die dramatische Wölbung der Sohle erinnern an Edward Green’s moderne massgefertigte Modelle, obwohl sicherlich noch radikaler in der Form. Die zisellierte Schuhspitze ist einer Massanfertigung von John Lobb durchaus ähnlich (vor der Trennung!), doch letztendlich ist sie absolut eigen und charakteristisch für Florsheim. In Kürze: eine Rarität, sowohl was die existierende Anzahl als auch die Individualität des Designs betrifft – von der hervorragenden Qualität des Alligator-Leders ganz zu schweigen. Diese Leder stammen von makellosen, auf Farmen gezüchteten Tieren (das Leder von Tieren auf freier Wildbahn zeigt auf Grund des Ueberlebenskampfes wesentlich mehr Spuren und Beschädigungen). Beide Schuhe haben eine identische regelmässige Musterung, kunstvoll ausgewählt um die glatte Front und den „Chisel-Toe“ zu verzieren. Alle Ränder sind mit wunderbarem edlem „Double Stitching“ eingefasst. Vielleicht nur noch ein halbes Dutzend Schuhmacher weltweit sind in der Lage eine derart kompromisslose Qualität herzustellen. Dieser spezielle Schuh, obwohl er von einem grossartigen Schuhmacher durchaus kopiert werden könnte, kann in seiner Authentizität und in seiner historischen Bedeutung nicht wiedererschaffen werden. Er ist einer der wenigen Ueberbleibsel in nahezu neuem Zustand; vergleichbar durchaus mit heutigen Konfektions-Schuhen zwischen 1200-2500 E und mit Massanfertigungen, die in die Tausende gehen können.

    Shoe Condition:

    Ausnehmend gut.
    Der Oberschuh: exzellent, kaum sichtbare Fältchen, nahezu ungetragen. Das Leder und die Nähte sind geschmeidig.
    Innenschuh: Perfekt sauber und keine Abnutzung an der Innensohle.
    Unterschuh: leicht getragen. Absatz: erste Abtragung an den (ersetzbaren) Gummi-Einsätzen.

    One of the most elegant and certainly among the most luxurious of all Alligator shoes is this vintage Johnston & Murphy 2-Eyelet, Split-Toe, Norwegian, a “Custom Order” shoe made at the peak of the firm’s importance in the 1950s and 1960s and 1970s. They compete with the best English and Hungarian shoes for durability and with the best Italian for detail and decoration, although these masterpieces of the shoemakers art may not be compared to the deluge of modern, mass produced, Spanish and Italian Alligator and Lizard Skin shoes, good for a few seasons wear at best. These are by comparison indestructible and become more beautiful with the passage of time. Good used examples are to be found on the market, albeit with some difficulty, when most other shoes of their age have long since perished. It is sad to note that today the old J & M firm is bankrupted out of existence, their good name sold to marketing interests to adorn contemptibly plebian product made off shore.

    And now to the pair at hand, a Custom Order Alligator Norwegian. Almost all J & M’s shoes were ready made, however their flagship stores in New York, Chicago and Dallas had each at certain times one fitter on duty for the custom trade. Measurements were taken, styles decided upon, leather chosen and the order sent to the central workshop where the shoes were hand made by selected shoemakers according to the client’s specifications, using specific lasts. These Johnston & Murphy Custom Ordered shoes, scarce even in their day, are hardly to be found today. More even than the collectors item that they certainly are, they are museum pieces, were there such a museum to assemble the sumptuary and sartorial masterpieces of the 20th Century.

    The experienced collector will immediately recognize the sculpted form of shoe and sole as custom made. The soles are formed around a steel shank as in the finest bootmaking. The narrow waist and dramatic angular flaring of the sole remind one of Edward Greens current bespoke line, although certainly more radical. The generous rounded and chisled toe are closer perhaps to bespoke John Lobbs before the divorce but finally they are J & M’s own. In short, a rarity in terms of number produced, numbers survived and in terms of its individualistic (and very pleasing) design. Needless to say the Alligator skins are of the finest quality, taken from unblemished farm raised animals (animals in the wild typically have too much damage and scaring from their more difficult existence), perfectly matched between shoes, artfully chosen to adorn the plain front and thrust of the chisel-toe. All edges are finished with double stitched borders. The stacked and dove-tailed McAfee style heel is nailed in the characteristic fashion of a custom shoe. Perhaps only a half dozen shoemakers in the world today are capable of producing a Alligator shoe, or any shoe, of this uncompromising quality, at any price. This particular shoe, while it can be copied by a great craftsman, cannot be duplicated in its authenticity and historical significance. It is one of very few remaining in this near new condition. Compare this to good ready made Alligator shoes in the 2-3000 range and custom made shoes in the 4-6000 range

    Interior: Perfectly clean with the no detectable wear to inner-sole.
    Bottoms: Soles: light trivial wear. Heel: light rolling only of the replaceable rubber inset.
