Johnston & Murphy’s version of this great classic shoe from their Crown Aristocraft prestige line uses a dramatic chisel-toe last that resembles those of earlier American and English bespoke shoemakers. This promises to be an unusually comfortable shoe. Very appropriate to business, daytime or even less formal evening dress, this impressive model never fails to draw compliments. Many more Derbys (open lacing) were and are produced than Oxfords (closed lacing) and fewer remain in circulation in this good condition now after 40-plus years. It is a testament to both the material, the finest Horween Shell Cordovan, and the painstaking manufacturing by this once great American shoemaker. J. & M.’s Aristocraft line was their uncontested best product, in all respects superior to most everything on the market today but something more distinguishes this particular pair. Johnston & Murphy has outdone itself in this shoe. The depth and richness of the colour, poised half way between purple and oxblood, and the incredible close grain of this particular piece of leather are astonishing. It is simply not within my ability to show the beauty of this leather in my photographs, but the rich patina developed lby these shoes cannot be duplicated except by time and myriad polishings.
