A fine, original, bespoke, pair of riding boots by this well known shoemaker, dated by the postmarks visible on the original shipping carton. For the contemporary version, see website, but no new pair can bring with it the history or equal the cashet of this wonderful pair from the Lobb of yesteryear, before the entry of Hermes into the business. These are, of course, made to order and therefore one of a kind and represent the panicle of workmanship from the Lobb “cottages”. By this I mean that since the Lobb custom shoes neither were nor are they made in one place, rather the orders are sub-contracted to, at any time, one of a half-dozen or dozen independent shoemakers around England. The results vary with the craftsman to which they are assigned. This pair is hands down the best I have ever seen. If you happen to be in NY and visit the Lobb store on Madison Avenue (between 61st & 62nd Streets), even though they are a branch of the French Lobbs, the English shoemaker there -I spoke with him at length last Fall- knows the workmanship on sight of the various English contractor-shoemakers used by the English Lobb and might be able to tell you the name of the actual craftsman. You will also be amused at today’s Lobb prices; shoes, not boots, ready-made in 2008 were ’round Euro 1150. I estimate that today, with VAT (MwSt) and boot trees these boots would be a £13,000 ordered from Lobb but with the acquisition of these boots you enter into the inner circle of shoe connoisseurs and cognoscenti.

An historical note: The good news is that you are soon to be in the company of Winston Churchill, Somerset Maugham, Charles de Gaulle, Alfred Hitchcock, J. Paul Getty, Duke Ellington, Gregory Peck and a smattering of discerning female luminaries—Jacqueline Kennedy and Katharine Hepburn, for example, were faithful customers. This is not to mention current clients such as The Prince of Wales and Hugh Grant. The bad news is that John Lobb bespoke shoes, apart from the astronomical prices, take at least six month and may take as long as a year to produce for first-time orders.

Kein neues Paar jedoch atmet die Geschichte dieser wunderbaren Stiefel aus den legendären Lobb-Jahren, noch bevor Hermes in die Firma eintrat. Dieses Paar ist natürlich eine Spezialanfertigung und daher einmalig. Es repräsentiert die Blüte der Schuhmacherkunst, wie sie noch in Lobb’s “Cottages” praktiziert wurde. Damit meine ich, dass die Massanfertigungen von Lobb niemals nur an einem Ort gefertigt wurden, sondern die Aufträge wurden an ein halbes Dutzend unabhängiger Meisterwerkstätten in ganz England vergeben. So variieren auch die Resultate entsprechend ihrer unterschiedlichen Herkunft. Dieses Paar ist, das kann ich guten Gewissens behaupten, das Beste was ich je vor mir hatte. Sollten Sie einmal wieder in NYC sein, dann besuchen Sie doch bitte die Lobb-Boutique, Madison Avenue (zwischen 61st& 62nd Streets). Obwohl ein Zweig der französischen Firma von Lobb, sagte mir der englische Schuhmacher dort – ich habe ausführlich mit Ihm sprechen können – dass er die Merkmale der verschiedensten englischen Schuhmacher, an die Lobb seine Aufträge vergibt, erkennen könne – so kann er Ihnen eventuell sogar den Namen der Werkstatt nennen, in dem dieser Ausnahme-Stiefel gefertigt wurde. Sie werden ebenfalls sehr amüsiert über die momentanen Preise sein; die Konfektions-Modelle belaufen sich auf Euro 1150, die Massanfertigungen beginnen bei £5916, Stiefel natürlich um einiges mehr, £9961, die Stiefel-Spanner selbst etwa £3231.

Ich schätze, dass man, mit VAT (MwSt) und Schuhspannern, in etwa auf Euro 6000 kommt – als direkte Bestellung von Lobb. Mit dem Erwerb dieses hier angebotenen Stiefels jedoch gelangen Sie in den inneren Kreis der Connaisseurs und Cognoscenti!

Dazu eine historische Anmerkung: Die gute Nachricht ist, dass Sie sich bald in bester Gesellschaft von Winston Churchill, Somerset Maugham, Charles de Gaulle, Alfred Hitchcock, J. Paul Getty, Duke Ellington, Gregory Peck befinden werden – und in der charmanten Nähe solcher anspruchsvoller Damen wie Jacqueline Kennedy and Katharine Hepburn – beide treue Kundinnen von Lobb. Nicht zu sprechen von heutiger Kundschaft, wie etwa dem Prince of Wales oder Hugh Grant. Die schlechte Nachricht ist, dass John Lobb’s Massanfertigungen heute bei etwa 3000 Euro beginnen und dass von Ihrer erstmaligen Bestellung bis zur Auslieferung mindestens 6 Monate, wenn nicht sogar bis zu einem Jahr, vergehen können.

La renommée de la marque John Lobb n’est plus à établir: elle est acquise depuis des générations pour la maison mère à Londres ainsi que pour la succursale ouverte à Paris au début du siècle dernier, et achetée par Hermès en 1976.
La pointure – 7.5E, en mesure anglaise, (8.5D US), – correspond à un 41.5 D continental. Elles sont dans un excellent état, ne présentant que quelques traces d’usure sur le talon original. Il n’y a aucun doute que, pour leur age, ces bottes n’ont été portées que peu de fois.
