+Fine – LODING, Paris, Classic Monk Strap: 43-43.5D (US 10D)
Classic Monk Strap
Judging from the Goodyear Welted sole and the workmanship in general, this excellent Monk appears to be from Loding’s top line, those shown in their own Paris boutique. In short, a very well made shoe, employing a fine grade of Calfskin, entirely glove leather lined and showing almost no wear, not to mention that it is a lovely somewhat stream-lined version of a classic model.
Despite certain shoemakers’ claims to have invented the style in the late 19th century, the Monk Strap originated in the the Middle Ages and is the oldest model of men’s shoes still being worn today. Of course, shoes with decorative buckles were present in European courts throughout the millennium and continue to be worn at ceremonial occasions today.
