Churchs’ “Custom Grade” is the quality on which their reputation is based; one of the great English shoes…and the few Shell Cordovan they produced are now the coveted prizes of avid collectors. With double sole and 360 degree split reverse welt (storm welt). Massive!

Church’s recent lasts used in cordovan shoes, especially for the American market -after all the oldest and largest market for cordovan- depart from Church’s typical rounded front to present a, frankly, more elegant chisel toe, as seen in the present shoe. The overall effect is remarkably smart for so ironclad a shoe. Church’s can still build a shoe to compete with and often surpass even the American cordovan producers in detail and finish. Granted, Church’s uses Horween cordovan like the other top makers but this hide, in a lovely warm tone between burgundy and brown, is exceptional.

In short, this is a shoe for your lifetime…as the great old Church’s we grew up with used to be!

NOTE: In 1999, Prada bought Church’s and, more recently, announced a price hike, across the entire line, of 40%.  This is not a typographical error; yes, 40%.!  This does not represent an adjustment for inflation. This is a complete repositioning of the brand in another price bracket, into the bracket at which Prada is most at home.  As an example of the price increase, a standard oxford that once cost £495, now costs £720. In the US, some models top $1200..….and you had best be careful you are buying an English-made, Custom Grade shoe.  In short, a word to the wise, the time to acquire our beloved real Church’s in now….and here at the old prices.
