Both the Chukka Boot and the Jodhpur Boot derive from the 19th century British presence in India, and the discovery of the game of Polo in the 1850s by British tea planters on the Burmese border with India. (A ‘chukker’ is a period of play in Polo). Both boots were readily adapted by the British at home and quickly became staples of the Gentleman’s wardrobe. The Chukka Boot is a casual, sporting boot to just above the ankle, plain toed, fastening with two (although sometimes three or four) high lacings or strap (as in a Monk). The Chukka Boot is often called the ‘Desert Boot’ through being much adopted -in suede- by both British and German forces in North Africa.

The high standard of workmanship in Church’s example of this boot includes channeled and skived (closed) Goodyear welted sole (as in the best custom work) and “dove-tailed” combination heel. Albeit in brown Scotch Grain,  with its higher-set eyelets and rearward set quarters, this model more closely approximates the British Army George Boot, introduced in 1952 to replace the Wellington Boot, traditionally worn as a formal mess, dress and parade boot.

The overall effect of the uninterrupted sweep of the vamp, the disappearance of the lacing under trousers, is one of sleekness and elegance and as highly recommended for daytime dress, for sportswear as it is for jeans.

Size: US 12C…..UK 11D…..Continental 46C, for the somewhat narrower foot. A difficult-to-obtain larger size.

Condition: All original and lightly worn. Sold without trees.

Dieses antike Paar von “Florsheim” ist aus Full-Grain-Kalbsleder gearbeitet, gefüttert mit feinem “Glove-Leather“, rahmengenäht, plus einer eichengegerbten Ledersohle. Dies ist ein sehr feiner und äusserst luxuriöser Stiefel, absolut schlicht im Design; seine Schönheit stammt vom aussergewöhnlichen Charme seiner Patina; dem antik-mahagony-braunen Kalbsleder. Insgesamt ein glamouröses Stück, das nicht so bald wieder zu sehen sein wird. Ein idealer Schuh für “Town or Country”.

Sowohl der Chukka-Stiefel als auch der Jodphur-Stiefel stammen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, den Tagen der britischen Präsenz in Indien, als das Polo-Spiel um 1850 von britischen Tee-Farmern an der burmesisch-indischen Grenze entdeckt wurde. Ein‚Chukker’ ist eine Zeitangabe aus dem Polo. Der Chukka-Stiefel wird ‘Desert Boot’ genannt, da er im 2. Weltkrieg, während der Western-Desert-Campaign gegen das Afrika-Corp, häufig von den Soldaten der britischen Armee bevorzugt wurde.
