A Rare and Unusual
Scotch Grain 5-Eyelet Derby
by
László Vass
for
Baldessarini, Hugo Boss
Euro 540The shoe in this listing is immediately recognizable as being in the traditional Austro-Hungarian style, with its emblematic tall and rounded toe box. It is a largely hand made shoe, made in Vass’s Hungarian atelier (some later ready-mades emanate from Rumanian contractors -but not this!), in a lovely Scotch (Pebble) Gros-Grain Calf with Channeled Double Sole and stacked leather Heel, with full leather lining. The channeling and skiving (closure of the channel) are visible in the photograph of the sole. The characteristic tri-angle-grouped brass nailing of the combination heel is harder to see in the photos but it is there, a sure sign of Vass’s own workshop.
The is an unusual model for Vass, probably commissioned by Boss for their frightfully expensive boutique line, a handsome unadorned shoe for the gentleman.
Size Details:
SIZE is given as 41 but by my careful measurement using fixed-size lasts, I take this to be a Continental 41.5 to 42 D or even E. Thus (US 8.5-9D/E) (UK 7.5-8E/F), correct for the mid-width foot or slightly wider foot.
Shoe Condition:
Superb condition, showing trivial wear, to the heel or soles. Custom-fitted shoe trees are included.
