Henry Maxwell Limited was founded in 1750 and is the oldest of the remaining bootmakers in London. Originally a famous spur-maker Maxwell thrived on the ubiquitous use of the horse for battle, ceremony, hunting, sport and personal transport, and soon supplied boots for cavalry regiments, hunting, polo etc. By the mid 19th century Maxwell was awarded the first of its many Royal Warrants by King George IV., and by the early 20th century Maxwell had grown to supply boots, shoes and a wide range of riding and hunting accessories from shops in London and Paris.
With its sister company Foster & Sons it trades today at 83 Jermyn Street opposite Fortnums.

This lovely classic pair of Cap-toe Oxfords is labelled with the old Dover Street location and indeed appears to have been built on the earlier last, thus before 1952, but the nail pattern of the heel suggest an even earlier vintage, more likely the 1930’s. Upon inquiry of Maxwells, we were told that the serial/customer number of the shoe predates their existent records and they agree that the late 1940s is its probable date. What ever its exact age this shoe is on the highest level of hand work in the old tradition and the overall effect of this classic model is discreet and supremely elegant, utilizing a saturated black calf, no more suitable colour exists for business or evening.

As to provenance: we do know from the other accompanying remnants of his wardrobe that this shoe was one of the earliest made (his later shoes were a bit larger) for a Mr. Robert Gascoigne Webster, an English naval engineer who served with the Admiralty during WWII, rising to the rank of Commodore. He returned to civilian life and industry and is known for his technical advancements of main gun battery design in capital ships, until the advent of modern guided missile armament.

Shoe Condition:

A beautifully bench made shoe with harrow waist and slightly flared front. This has been resoled by the maker and the bottoms are excellent. Tops show considerable checking at the outer edges, nevertheless quite serviceable for a shoe approaching a century of age. For the collector, this pair comes trailing clouds of history. Sold without trees but ask for correctly fitted trees, should you require them.

“Henry Maxwell Limited” wurde im Jahre 1750 gegründet und ist der älteste noch verbliebenen Stiefel-Hersteller in London. Ursprünglich ein bekannter Sporn-Macher, profitierte er vor allem vom Einsatz des Pferdes im Krieg, bei zeremoniellen Anlässen, bei der Jagd, beim Sport und im Transportwesen und so wurde er bald zum Lieferanten für Kavallerie-Regimenter, für den Polo-Sport etc. Im 19. Jahrhunderts wurde “Maxwell” von König George den IV. der erste seiner zahlreichen “Royal Warrants” (königlichen Zertfikate) verliehen und mit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts war “Maxwell” so beliebt und verbreitet, dass er Geschäfte in London und Paris mit Stiefeln, Schuhen und einer ganzen Reihen von Reit- und Jagdzubehör belieferte. Mit seiner Schwester-Company “Foster& Sons” ist er heute in der Jermyn Street 83– gegenüber Fortnums- zu finden.

Es kann vorkommen, dass “Maxwell” bis 100 Arbeitsstunden in die Herstellung von einem Paar Stiefel, oder einem Paar Schuhe investiert. Dieser wunderschöne, klassische Oxford/Cap-Toe trägt das Label der alten Werkstatt in der Dover Street und scheint tatsächlich auf einem der früheren Leisten gearbeitet worden zu sein – vor 1952 – das Nagel-Muster lässt sogar auf eine noch frühere Herkunft schliessen, eher wohl aus den 40ern. Was auch immer sein genaues Alter ist; dieser Schuh ist von bestechender Qualität in seiner, aus ältester Tradition stammenden, Handwerkskunst. Seine Erscheinung ist im besten Sinne klassisch, diskret und höchst elegant zu nennen.
