Red Calfskin Penny Loafer
Unknown Hungarian Master
This collector’s item is from another era of shoemaking, another “technology”, the rarely-to-be-seen-today ancestor of the great contemporary Central European shoemakers of Munich, Vienna and Budapest. This masterwork harkens to the days and ways of the K.und K, an historically important museum piece destined for the avid collector.
The outers sole is hand sewn into a channel and then skived over. The heel is armoured with a steel plate as is the toe. This is a very well made shoe on a par with the finest offerings of the most famous shoemakers, the kind of craftsmanship that Dinkelacker, Vass, Reiter and others of the Central European “Axis” aspire to. The shoe itself betrays no name, nor region (other than it was found in Hungary) nor particular age, except that the half cloth/half leather lining is of another time, as is the definitely antique use of wooden nails to fasten the sole. The original shoe trees made for this pair are included.
