This is among the rarest finds that we are likely to come across; and it is as exquisite as it is rare, a fully custom made shoe from the hands of the great Viennese shoemaker A. Maftei.

Originally from Romania, Alexandru represents the third generation of his family’s shoemakers. He moved to Austria in the late 1980 where he perfected his skill with the legendary Viennese shoemakers, Rudolf Scheer & Soehne, until opening his own workshop in 1996 where he works with his children as apprentices. His shoes are all hand-welted, hand lasted and hand sewn. His signature Norwegian welted shoes are stitched by hand. Needless to say, his production in miniscule, even compared to many other bespoke shoemakers and to find an example of his work on the after-market is exceedingly uncommon. Witness, this is the first to appear in these pages in over a decade.

The shoes in question, in finest calf suede, is modeled after George Cleverley’s famous “Butterfly” Loafer. With hand-raised apron, hand-sewn closed channel sole and chisel toe, this presents as striking a shoe as ever there was in a loafer. If it’s pedigree or its beauty were not enough to speak to it’s rarity, this size at the end of the size spectrum would do so. A lovely shoe, highly recommended.

Condition: excellent, fitted with protective thin rubber “Topy” sole (removable) and Vibram heels, both hardly worn.
