Alden of New England
Oxblood Shell Cordovan Full Brogue Oxford
The idea behind cordovan, the reason it has been so admired by American gentlemen for 100 years and, more recently, by European gentlemen, is not only for its well-known qualities of durability and weather resistance but for the unequaled patina it develops over the years and repeated polishings. It has been said that nothing is as good as new cordovan except old cordovan, and the truth of that saying is to be seen in this present pair of shoes. The patina can be compared to that of old mahogany furniture, furniture that cannot be bought but must be inherited. And so it is with these shoes- most likely from the 1950s- unless you are very old, you can only have inherit them from an elegant relative who wore them for half a century before handing them down to the next generation. Of course, for the boys –and I call them “boys” pointedly- who must have the latest style, these shoes have no meaning whereas for the gentleman for whom antiquity and tradition are everything, these shoes have no equal.
Alden is, of course the premiere purveyor of cordovan shoes in the world, and this shoe is proof positive of their excellence; truly one of my personal favourites. Every piece of leather is a bit different from every other and I begin to believe that Alden reserves their choicest hides for their Brooks Brother production. In any cases the leather used in this shoe is an especially handsome piece of Cordovan and beautifully coloured in an intense and deeply saturated oxblood.
Cordovan is traditionally an American preoccupation but now, lately, very much in vogue among European businessmen and professionals, who, after all, are the most likely to be able to afford these 600-plus Euro shoes. Available to you here without Duty, VAT or MwSt.
