A.M. Kroop and Sons was established in New York by the master shoemaker Adolph Michael Kroop in 1907 when he immigrated to America. In 1927 he moved from New York to Maryland, where the business has remained in family hands ever since. Being near the race tracks, the business gradually specialized in jockey boots, jodhpurs, hunt and show boots, as well as custom and special order boots. Today, 100 years later, Kroop boots are being worn by a majority of the jockeys, trainers and exercise riders across America.

The firm prides itself on its old-fashioned, slower-paced production techniques, producing a boot using the same 125 steps to that were used decades ago. Entering the shop, one feels that one has gone back in time, back to a gentler world of craftsmen and artisans, where quality is the goal and hand-craftsmanship is performed with pride.
This particular boot, a Zipper Jodhpur, is Kroops signature boot and, to my knowledge, particular to this one firm. First introduced in 1930, it remains a favourite on the race track. It makes a perfect street shoe/boot, the plain front showing beautifully under trousers or jeans, and both supportive and flexible because of the double elastic gussets. Suffice it to say it is the only footwear I have ever shown with a zipper!
