The Saddle Oxford
by
Keith Highlander
Circa 1980
Euro 240Out of the over 200 American Shoemakers clustered around New England at the start of the 20 Century, only a handful remain, among them Bostonian, Cole-Haan, J &M and, in Europe, the better know Alden and Allen-Edmonds. The great Florsheim, Hanover, Cordwainer, Nunn-Bush and others exist today as marketing firms, the bulk of their wares being produced off-shore. Lamentable.
The Saddle Oxford is infrequently seen today and yet it is a great classic, a purely American university style from the 1920’s. Like all Saddle Oxfords, it (literally) walks the line between a dressy shoe (because of the plain toe) and a sporting shoe (because of the University and Golf traditions behind this model). This is a marvelous classic model in the old tradition of workmanship, a handsome and extremely durable shoe in a hundred year old tradition. The rich oxblood colour calf is easily mistaken for shell cordovan. Goodyear welted, of course.
