  From the late 70s to his death in 1991 the great George Cleverley worked as a design consultant for New & Lingwood, and an excellent firm bearing his name, George J. Cleverley & Co., under the direction of Mr. George Glasgow, which exists to this day. Cleverley is considered to be the greatest master shoemaker of the mid- to late-20th century, and in a direct line with his master, arguably the greatest master of modern English shoemaking, the London shoemaker, Nikolaus Tuczek.

  The present shoe, dated July 2013, is a sculptural masterpiece. The flared foot and wasted instep bespeak a mastery of both design and craftsmanly execution. The model itself, the Cap-Toe Oxford, is an established classic and, in my view, fundamental to a gentleman’s wardrobe, appropriate, indeed highly complementary, to a wide variety of dress. The present shoe, with its dramatic lasting and unmistakable pedigree, elevates any combination with suits or blazers, for town as well as country, with khakis, tweeds and any other earth tones. But also, yes, absolutely; brown with blue or gray!

  Bespoke shoes at Cleverley start now at £5000, which is hardly surprising but shoe trees, custom made to fit bespoke shoes, as included here, would, alone, be £1100. Convert to Euros or US$, add the VAT or MwS, and soon it adds up to real money.

  This is a wearable work of art and, unlike most modern shoes, even from the best bespoke shoemakers, the shoe will continue to increase in value, in years to come. The beauty, not to mention the historical importance of this great rarity cannot be overstated. But money aside, there is very little to be found from the last half century that possesses the stylistic boldness or quiet equipoise of this present pair.
