  The idea behind cordovan, the reason it has been so admired by American gentlemen for 100 years and, more recently, by European gentlemen, is not only for its well-known qualities of durability and weather resistance but for the unequaled patina it develops over the years and repeated polishings.

  Alden is, of course the premiere purveyor of cordovan shoes in the world, and this shoe is proof positive of their excellence; truly one of my personal favourites. Every piece of leather is a bit different from every other and, in any cases, the leather used in this shoe is an especially handsome piece of Cordovan and beautifully coloured in an intense and deeply saturated oxblood.

  BAD NEWS: From my recent visit to Brooks Brothers in San Francisco, I discovered that their cordovan shoes are no longer supplied by Alden. As Brooks Brothers, like so many other retailers has struggled to survive the flight of shoppers to the internet and the rush of business to find the bottom in price and quality, they replaced Alden with significantly cheaper and commensurately less well made shoes. These and the other authentic Aldens will be difficult to replace once they are sold. Of course Alden themselves survives and continues to produce their uncompromising products, now in the $900 category with tax.

  Cordovan is traditionally an American preoccupation but now, lately, very much in vogue among European businessmen and professionals, who, after all, are the most likely to be able to afford these 900-plus Euro shoes. Available to you here without Duty, VAT or MwSt.
