Bespoke or ready-to-wear, Lattanzi’s shoes are entirely hand made. Perhaps this justifies prices double those of John Lobb’s, although it might well be the extraordinarily lovely leathers they use. Either way, they boast a fiercely loyal clientele for whom all other shoes are thought to be, by comparison, less comfortable.
Most of their small staff of artisans in the Italian province of Ancora are dedicated to the production of custom made shoes (prices starting at $5300), but their Madison Avenue shop, opened in 2006, is now offering a variety of prêt-a-porter models at a relatively modest $3175 and up. Lattanzi’s styles have been somewhat “creative” at times, more suitable perhaps for the red carpet at Cannes than the board room or a gentleman’s dining club, but the pair shown here is a welcomed tour-de-force in restraint, a perfectly executed example of a great traditional classic, the “wholecut”, in which one single piece of leather is painstakingly formed around the last. This is, needless to say, the most difficult model for any craftsman to execute.
Present are the signature initials nailed into the instep and do not overlook the charming leather tassels that finish the laces, a tiny touch of decoration on an otherwise supremely sleek and elegant shoe.
