    Flying Jodhpur Boot

The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. In the late 1800’s, many pioneering New England families wore Frye boots as they crossed the country to the West.

The Flying Jodhpur boot, with its complex and highly detailed design, with cross-over strapping and three channels holding the strap in place is an invention of the Calzado Tres Caballos, bootmakers in Veracruz, established 1935, and considered the finest bootmaker in Mexico. Judging from old advertisements, this handsome variation, a cross between the classic Jodhpur and a vintage flyers boot has been in production since at least 1955. The original Tres Caballos have been out of production for many years and much in demand.

The Flying Jodhpur gained popularity with the Mexican Army for their dress uniform. Eventually, as many Army officers retired and graduated into local and national police forces, they took the beloved Flying Jodhpur with them and adopted it to their police uniforms. A somewhat less attractive group of admirers of the Flying Jodhpur were, I am told, the more affluent members of the Mexican drug cartels, many of them former police officers who had gravitated to the more lucrative career.

Current shoemakers like Frye and Silvano Lattanzi (the latter at astronomical prices), have stepped in with new production of this spectacular model.

Frye’s version here, with its massive Goodyear welted double sole and non-skid hard rubber “Vulcan” heel, complete this robust classic. The glove-leather lining promises extraordinary comfort. This lovely pair in saturated black boxcalf is as handsome under dress trousers as it is supportive and durable off-road or on horseback. Unfortunately out of production for many years; even the standard model is no longer available from Frye. Only this excellent example remains.
