“Butterfly” Loafer / Slipper
Euro 480
George Cleverley apprenticed under the great Nikolaus Tuczek who’s stylistic influence can be seen clearly in the present pair of Loafers and in the work of many great shoemakers including Lobb who names more than one style after the master. From the late 70s to his death in 1991 the great George Cleverley worked as a design consultant for New & Lingwood. The present Cleverley firm is considered to be among the top rank of English bespoke shoemakers.
Mr. George Glasgow of the current George J. Cleverley & Co. firm asked me recently to make clear that Edward Green produces no shoes for his firm; this is important to note. As the output of their own workrooms does not exceed 10 pairs per week, these ready-mades are made by someone else and opinions vary as to which Southhampton jobber that may be. See the discussion under: http://www.styleforum.net/t/203500/george-cleverley-anthony-cleverley-models
Whoever the actual producer, we can safely say that this is a pair of loafers like few other s-notice the apron with discreet brogueing and fine pinking (zig-zag). The level of workmanship is certainly on a lever with Edward Green's or Crockett's "Hand Grade", beautifully lasted with characteristic chisel-toe, small waist, flair at the ball of the foot, channeled and "skived" welt, as in the best custom-made shoes, and hand-antiqued to a rich walnut patina. The butterfly design needs no further discussion. It is tradition built upon tradition by the greatest master shoemaker of the late 20th century, George Cleverley, in a direct line with his master, arguably the greatest master of modern English shoemaking, the London shoemaker, Nikolaus Tuczek,
